Organizers of the Galveston Mardi Gras are doing everything they can to make this years celebration more family friendly they want to clean up the drunks, topless college chicks and urine. Ah, good luck with that. Anyway, all the hallmarks of the event will be there for the more than 250,000 revelers expected to visit the island: a beachfront carnival, Krewe–sponsored balls and parties, and more than 40 parades through the streets of Galveston. Want a more cultured celebration? There are more than a dozen black-tie affairs happening around town. Of course, there will be plenty of food, and more King Cake than you can stuff your face with. While the El Grande Gras is still in Nawlins (shout out to the Big Easy!), this soiree by the sea is a helluva lot shorter drive (and you wont have to deal with those speed traps on I-10). Through February 5. For information and a complete schedule, call 888-425-4753 or visit www.galveston.com. Price varies by event.
