For everyone who digs Morrissey’s sensitivity but wishes he had a little more sex appeal: Meet Nina Diaz. Occasionally referred to as the “female Morrissey,” this spark plug of a singer fronts all-girl San Antonio trio Girl in a Coma after being recruited by big sister, drummer Phanie D, at age 12. Van tours and much cross-ยญcountry rocking out ensued, eventually in front of none other than Joan Jett, who signed the group to her Blackheart Records on the spot. It’s clear why: The Girls’ vibrant guitars recall the good old days of Smiths-style rock, perfectly complemented by Diaz’s rich alto ย— mournful, sultry, smooth and strong. Be sure to check out their take on “I’ll Be Home For Christmas”, which is currently streaming on their MySpace profile and for sale on a little start-up website called iTunes.
