“It was 30 years ago today.” Okay, that’s not exactly how the lyrics to “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” go, but it’s close. And so is the 30-year anniversary (give or take 56 days) of the historic 1977 National Women’s Conference that was held here in Houston, where 20,000 women came together to discuss the future of women’s rights. At today’s talk at the Wortham Center, you can hear what 73-year-old feminist icon Gloria Steinem, a conference attendee, has to say about the progress of feminism during the last three decades and the new challenges of the women’s rights movement. Oh, and if you want some one-on-one time with the woman who helped found Ms. magazine, pop an extra $200 and attend a private reception with her.
