Whoยd have thought that a musical about the inventor of the printing press could become such a hit? But thatยs exactly whatยs happened with Anthony King and Scott Brownยs comic song-fest Gutenberg! The Musical! The showยs about two guys named Bud and Doug, aspiring writers whoยve put together a backerยs presentation of their musical historic epic. With a stage full of baseball caps (to tell whoยs who) and an inexhaustible supply of enthusiasm, they play all the characters, including a dude called simply ยOld Black Narrator.ย (The duo hopes the show wonยt flop like their last project, Steven King, the Musical).
Critics have loved the quirky musical about making musicals. Even The New York Times called King and Brown ยsuperb comic writers.ย Happily, Houstonians get their turn to laugh it up at the sweetly silly show. The show opens at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 13, then runs at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 5 p.m. select Sundays. Through April 19. Theater LaB, 1706 Alamo.
