It doesn’t matter if you’ve never lassoed a horse — pull on your boots and dust off your Stetson, because everyone’s a cowboy or cowgirl during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. And while the concerts get all the attention (c’mon, Jonas Brothers!), there are actually, oh, a few more events going on. Things kick off with the Downtown Rodeo Parade, while carnivorous teams of cowpokes compete in the World’s Championship Bar-B-Que contest. Rodeo events include horse cutting, roping, sheep dog trials and “Xtreme Bulls.” The little fellers can enjoy a carnival and pig races, and there’s lots of livestock to look at and pet. There’s even something called a “Beef Trivia” contest — so brush up on your knowledge of prime cuts and dry rubs. Those looking for a little divine guidance and protection can attend the Cowboy Church (just don’t be surprised to hear a lot of those Xtreme Bull riders praying about getting to the rodeo finals instead of getting to heaven).
