He’s the man artist Paul Budnitz called the “greatest toy artist on the planet”: Huck Gee, the maker of handcrafted Dunny figures. He’s also a bit of a cheater, not in an “I always win at poker” way, but in an “I said I make my art in limited runs of ten, when I really always make an 11th copy” way. Fans were thrilled when Gee revealed his 11th-copy secret and held his “11/10” exhibit and sale in California, which was attended by toy art aficionados from around the world.
Now Gee is taking his show on the road — not with his “bastardized Asian pop culture” figures, but with his brand-new book, The Art of Huck Gee. It’s a 150-page, full-color retrospective of his work; there’s a black-covered regular edition and a white-covered limited edition. During this book tour, fans have the opportunity to pick up one of only 800 white-covered copies (of course, knowing Gee, there are probably 801 copies out there).
The line, which will no doubt be around the block, starts at 5 p.m. with Gee’s appearance and signing at 6 p.m. Domy Books, 1709 West-heimer. For information, call 713-523-3669 or visit www.domystore.com. Free.
