This edition of the Inprint Margarett Root Brown Reading Series has a definite Texas twang. Native Houstonians Gwendolyn Zepeda will read and discuss her new novel Lone Star Legend, while Austinite Oscar Casares does the same with his late 2009 release Amigoland.
Zepeda’s Lone Star Legend follows the exploits of fledgling journalist Sandy Saavedra who, with an out-of-touch-with-reality boss, insecure boyfriend and messy mother, is facing one crisis after another. First, her boss takes Sandy’s respectable column LatinoNow and turns it into a farcical imitation of itself called Nacho Papi’s (as in “This is not your papi’s Web site.”) Instead of covering legitimate issues such as immigration and education, Sandy is covering chupacabra sightings and semi-celebrities. Outed as the writer of a personal blog called MyModernTragiComedy.com, which details her fractured relationships with her boyfriend and mom, Sandy’s world suddenly explodes as her friends, family, co-workers and readers all weigh in on Sandy’s personal life. 7:30 p.m. Alley Theatre, 615 Texas.
