Houston novelist Kay Finch began writing thrillers when she realized that some of the legal clients she worked with had only one real solution to their troubles: hire a hit man. “I could never say that, of course,” she laughs, “but I’ve certainly thought it.” Finch’s latest title is Final Cut, the second in a series that features private investigator Corie McKenna. “In the beginning of the book, she’s just out to serve a subpoena to a witness. When she gets to the house, she finds the woman dead in the backyard pool.” From there, McKenna stumbles onto more wrongdoings and finds that she’s become a target for someone desperate to stop her from asking any more questions.

According to Finch, McKenna is a composite based on private investigators that she worked with in Racehorse Haynes’s office many years ago. McKenna is also a bit of an alter ego for the novelist. “She certainly does lots of things that I only wish I could do,” admits Finch. 4:30 p.m. Murder by the Book, 2342 Bissonnet.
