The blockbuster musical Rent is slated to leave the Great White Way soon, its 12–year run a feat by anyone’s standards. But it pales in comparison to its inspiration, Puccini’s timeless opera La Bohème, which the Houston Grand Opera is performing today. Recession-worried twentysomethings and opera buffs will find something to like in the work (sung in Italian with English subtitles), which centers on the love story between the poet Rodolfo and the ailing seamstress Mimi. A bonus: Several of the leads, including Ana María Martínez (who plays Mimi), are HGO Studio alums. 7:30 p.m. today. Through May 3. Brown Theater, Wortham Theater Center, 500 Texas. For information and a full schedule, call 713-546-0200 or visit www.houstongrandopera.org . $20 to $275.
