Latin American cultural expert Gregorio Luke starts things off at Las Fiestas de Frida. He’ll discuss the impact and legacy of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, best known for her emotionally raw self-portraits. Then it’s on to a reception, where the mixture of art and food includes a display of rare photographs of Kahlo taken by her intimate friend, the famous portraitist Nickolas Muray. Members of the Canal Street Gallery will also present new Mexican-themed artwork. (Both the photos of Kahlo and the new works by gallery members will remain on exhibit until September 30.) While you walk around the gallery, munch on a spread by Chef Mario, who interprets Kahlo’s own recipes. Or try La Pasion de Frida, a new flavor Trentino Gelato is introducing for the occasion.

Luke’s presentation is at 5:30 p.m. at the Americas Reception Hall, 2311 Canal. The art exhibit and reception is at 6:30 p.m. at Canal Street Gallery, 2219 Canal. For information, call 713-223-2219 or visit www.canalstreetgallery.com. Free.
