Filmmaker and visual artist Y. David Chung discusses and screens his documentary Koryo Saram — The Unreliable People as part of My Voice Would Reach You, a festival of visual and performing arts that explore cultural and economic freedom in Asia. Taking its title from Stalin’s designation of Koreans in the Soviet Union as unreliable people and enemies of the state, Koryo Saram recounts the hardships deported Koreans suffered in Russia under his rule. The deportees worked to integrate into Soviet society while laboring under brutal conditions in Kazakhstan. Newly uncovered archival footage, along with new interviews, chronicles their struggles.
Koryo Saram, which Chung co-directed with Matt Dibble, was named Best Documentary by the National Film Board of Canada and is a thought-provoking look at a little-known era in history.
