On Our Streaming Radar this week, we have a wildly fascinating documentary about one of comedy’s biggest stars, a return to the Yellowstone universe, and an animated family fantasy back for another round of adventures.
First up, Funny Money: The Dane Cook Story.
Now, if you’re a millennial like myself, Dane Cook probably holds a pretty vivid place in your memory of discovering stand-up comedy. From the mid-2000s into the early 2010s, he was one of—if not the—biggest names in comedy. He was selling platinum comedy albums at a time when the comedy album felt almost passé, and starring alongside Jessica Alba and Jessica Simpson in movies that made him an even bigger household name.
But while Dane was building, his brother was stealing.
Cook’s half brother, who also served as his business manager, stole roughly $12 million from him. Both his brother and his brother’s then-wife, Erika, ended up in prison.
This documentary follows Cook’s rise and the devastating betrayal within his own family. It features fascinating interviews with Dane, and even a new interview with Erika, who figures prominently in the film.
It’s one to go out of your way to watch, because this story is truly unbelievable. Funny Money: The Dane Cook Story is available now on demand.
Up next, Marshals returns for a second season.
Luke Grimes is back as Kayce Dutton, alongside Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos and more. The series follows Kayce as he trades ranch life for a U.S. Marshals unit in Montana, drawing on his cowboy roots and Navy SEAL training.
As you’d expect from the Yellowstone universe, there are familiar faces, familiar themes and plenty of drama. It’s also a testament to the staying power of Taylor Sheridan’s first big television hit. That world keeps expanding, and it doesn’t look like it’s going away anytime soon.
Marshals premieres Sunday, October 4, on CBS, with on-demand streaming beginning Monday, October 5, on Paramount Plus.
Lastly, The Sisters Grimm returns for a second season on Apple TV.
Based on the books by Michael Buckley, this animated family fantasy follows Sabrina and Daphne Grimm, descendants of the Brothers Grimm. They investigate mysteries in a town where fairy-tale characters are real, while trying to unravel the disappearance of their parents.
It puts a new spin on the fairy tales many of us grew up with, and it’s another example of Apple TV finding ways to reach different audiences. For my money, it continues to be one of the stronger streaming services when it comes to the quality of its content.
All six episodes of The Sisters Grimm’s second season arrive Friday, October 2, on Apple TV.
