Since meeting at Kent State in 1996, Kimberly Karpanty, Rebecca Malcolm-Naib and Karen Stokes have been making movement together for their company, Travesty Dance Group. Whatยs the travesty, you ask? In their words, itยs partly the dearth of arts funding and partly danceยs ยperipheralย place in society, but mostly itยs the fact that Karpanty lives in Cleveland, -Malcom-Naib lives in Philadelphia and Stokes lives in Houston. The result is that the trio is always trying something new. Case in point: Todayยs Portables, a collection of seven brand-new repertory works by the versatile Stokes, including the color-themed ยOrangeย and ยTransparentย and a solo, ยInterlude 1,ย about loss and memory. Incorporating original music, poetry and a ยfestival of balloons,ย the program may prompt Stokes and friends to change the name of the company.
