Fifty oversize photographs of extreme adventure sports will dot Discovery Green during the Red Bull Illume exhibit. Each of the images is impressive, but several stand out. Theres a close-up by Ricky Adam of cyclist Alex Kennedys bruised and callused hands during a six-day ride in Berlin. Tattooed across his wrists are the words Forever Young. On a different scale is Marcelo Maragnis shot of rock climber Bruno Dias hanging off a treacherous ledge in São Tomé das Letras, Brazil. Seen at dusk with a multicolored sky in the background, the mountainside is awash in deep oranges and burnt ambers.
One of the best examples of an athlete captured at the peak of action is Josh Letchworths shot of wakeskater Ben Horan, whos precariously balanced sliding on the edge of the ramp, with drops of water frozen around him mid-air. Theres a moment in every trick where time stands still
this is definitely one of those moments, Letchworth said in press materials.
For the best effect, see the Red Bull Illume images after dark when the photographs will be back-lit. X Games champion Ryan Sheckler hosts the shows opening reception 6 to 10 p.m. January 7. Regular viewing hours are 6 to 10 p.m. daily. Through January 17. 1500 McKinney. For information, visit www.redbullillume.com. Free.
