The speaker for todayย’s Return to the Ancestors: Builders of New York lecture has a pretty cool gig. As Director of the African Burial Ground Project, Dr. Michael Deblakey heads a research team investigating the gravesite of some 400 African slaves buried in whatย’s now Manhattan. Discovered during construction for skyscrapers, the graves are an unprecedented find revealing an enormous amount of information about the people who built Colonial New York. During todayย’s lecture, heย’ll share what his team has learned so far and the creation of the first U.S. National Monument honoring African Americans from Colonial times. 7 p.m. The Menil Collection, 1515 Sul Ross.
