Kids can get a jump start on the 4th of July at the “Stars & Stripes” celebration, a special all-day event where visitors can create works of art, patriotic or otherwise, using the colors of the flag. There will be red, white and blue shapes for concocting abstract works (channeling de Kooning, if you will), and there’s also a fireworks design station. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Children’s Museum of Houston, 1500 Binz.
