Don’t let Matt Besser‘s slick L.A. address and impressive comedy credentials fool you: The man is from Arkansas. A founding member of the Chicago sketch troupe Upright Citizens Brigade and a producer of its Comedy Central show, Besser returns to the South for the jokes in his latest show “Woo Pig Sooie,” named after the Arkansas Razorback yell. Besser says his love for football is the closest example of religious fanaticism a half-Jewish, half-Protestant, all-atheist man can muster. Besser’s routine is a general rant on American piety, but only a Southerner can truly appreciate the bombastic scolding of a fundamentalist grandmother.
