Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakulย’s latest offering, Syndromes and a Century, has been making the rounds ย— and winning awards ย— on the film festival circuit. Described as ย“an experiment in memoryย” by the director, Syndromes and a Century is inspired by the lives of Weerasethakulย’s parents before they became lovers. The film is told in two parts: the first half following Dr. Toey, a young woman working in a quiet rural hospital, and the second following Dr. Nohng as he makes his way at a modern urban medical center. Depicting a series of recollections and encounters through lingering visuals and a collapsed time structure, the film is an exploration of how we remember. Thanks to the Asian Studies Program at Rice, the film makes its Houston debut this weekend at the campusย’s Media Center.
