Achim Kaufmann, Frank Gratkowski and Wilbert de Joode ย try saying that three times fast. Kaufmann and company are probably used to dumb Americans mispronouncing their names. The three men, weird names and all, make up the Achim Kaumann Trio, with its namesake on piano, Gratkowski on saxophone and clarinet, and de Joode on bass. They play something like a chamber orchestra version of jazz, with a focus on texture and counterpoint. With more restraint than most jazz schools, the trioยs style is modern, classical, and contemporary all at once.
You know, we really should learn how to say their names. Hey Wilbert, whereยs the accent on Joode? 8 p.m. Latham Auditorium, Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Avenue. For information, call 713-928-5653 or visit www.namelesssound.org. $10 to $13; free for everyone under 18.
