Okay, so itยs Christmas and a) you donยt celebrate Christmas, b) your familyยs far, far away, or c) theyยre in the next room and youยll do anything to get away from them. Never fear, the French are here to save you with The Closet. The 2001 comedy about an accountant who discovers heยs about to be fired is ยa bonbon spiked with mirth and malice,ย according to Rolling Stone. And it might be the perfect anti-Christmas movie. An accountant (Daniel Auteuil) who works at a contraceptive manufacturer figures out that the boss canยt fire anyone whoยs gay without being called a homophobe and inviting a lawsuit. So the lonely, dull accountant sends his boss a photograph that insinuates that his life might be more ยinterestingย than the world had thought. What follows is a comedic ride through the farcical land of misunderstandings ย the kind the French do so well. And as is fitting for the holiday season, the accountantยs life actually does get much more exciting before all is said and done. Gรฉrard Depardieu fans will love seeing the French actor as an icky bigot. And Auteuil wears a giant condom tip on his head with the grace only he can muster.
