Arthur Miller’s The Crucible is set during the Salem Witch Trials, a time when superstition was stronger than science. The Crucible’s timeless story of a small town — which is about to be destroyed because its residents abandon their reason and humanity in favor of ignorance and prejudice — exposes the weaknesses of the human condition, our quickness to condemn and demand justice before we have even heard the facts, and our willingness to give in to social pressure to believe in the absurd. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the play, evidence of its lasting appeal to audiences everywhere.
