Yeah, itย’s kind of a weird title: The Holy Modal Rounders: Bound to Lose, but donย’t let that put you off. In case you donย’t know, the Holy Modal Rounders is a folk band that started way, way, way back in the 1960s (you remember, before the Internet, Monica Lewinsky and the iPhone). The film Bound to Lose follows The Rounders from their Greenwich Village beginnings through their drugged-out mid-life/career crisis to their current resurgence in popularity. Director Sam Wainwright Douglas (an ex-Houstonian) and partner Paul C. Lovelace call the film a ย“surreal saga of the infamous bad boys of folk.ย” Who knew folk music had bad boys? Joining Rounders Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber onscreen are playwright Sam Shepard (who was once the bandย’s drummer), the Lovinย’ Spoonfulย’s John Sebastian, former Village Voice music critic Robert Christgau and Yo La Tengoย’s Ira Kaplan, among others.

Douglas will be in attendance at the filmย’s Friday and Saturday screenings to answer a few questions. Oh, and the film is ย“for mature audiences only.ย” Guess the Rounders must have been the really, really bad boys of folk. 7 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday.
