Discover the grand history of Galveston Island’s Strand District, which was once known as the Wall Street of the southwest, during today’s Strand Walking Tour. The one-hour expedition starts at the Le Clere building, which was built in 1875 by coal baron Isadore Le Clere. After his death, the shop served as a grocery store, art gallery, cigar manufactory and magazine business office; it is currently the home to the tour’s sponsor, the Galveston Historical Foundation. The tour concludes at Hendley Row, a group of pre-Civil War-era buildings that once served as headquarters to the Confederate Army troops charged with defending the island during the American Revolution. 9 a.m. Saturdays. Through September 4. 2417 Strand. For information, call 409-765-7834 or visit www.galvestonhistory.org. $5.
