Actor/director Robert Redford credits The Whole Shootin Match (1978) as one of the films that inspired him to launch the Sundance Institute. The first film by Eagle Pennell, The Whole Shootin Match features Lou Perryman and Sonny Carl Davis as two small-time con artists chasing a big score. Match had an almost zero budget, which resulted in a rough look onscreen, but it became an indie classic due to Pennells storytelling skills. He captured a specific time and place: 1977 Austin.
The film was lost for some 25 years before it was restored from the only known existing print. Actor Sonny Carl Davis and filmmaker Brian Huberman, a frequent Pennell collaborator and current chair of the Rice University Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts, will introduce todays screening, part of the MFAH Film Revival/Texas Independent Film Network Screening series. 7 p.m. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 1001 Bissonnet.
