ยWhen a lot of people hear the words ยUniversity of Houston campus,ย their first reaction is, ยEeewww,ยย says Jim Parsons. ยThat shouldnยt be the case, though, because the campus really has a lot going for it.ย And Parsons should know, as heยll be one of the tour guides for todayยs University of Houston Architecture and Public Art Walking Tour, brought to you by the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance. Parsons points out that despite ยsome regrettable stuff from the ย60s and ย70s,ย the campus is filled with plenty of original art deco buildings as well as ยsome Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired architecture and Philip Johnsonยs iconic Architecture -Building.ย
Parsons says UH also has an underappreciated history, which includes the contributions of Houstonian Hugh Roy Cullen, who, even though he didnยt have a high school education, donated millions of dollars to UH. The tour will also cover UHยs crucial role in World World II. ยUH was the home of several training institutes during World War IIย
About 33,000 people were trained at UH in war-related programs.ย Anything else? ยYeah,ย he says. ยFor example, did you know that UH may be the only university where the athletic teams were named after the school newspaper?ย No, tell us more. ยWell, come on the tour and youยll hear the story.ย See ya there, Parsons. Tickets go on sale at 5:30 p.m.; tour starts at 6 p.m. Fine Arts Park, 4800 Calhoun. For information, call 713-216-5000 or visit www.ghpa.org/tours. $7 to $10.
