“Wishing Well for Houston”

For those of us who have tossed coins into a fountain only to be disappointed when nothing happens, “Wishing Well for Houston,” an installation at the Art League Houston, now guarantees that those pennies and nickels will help make someone’s life better. Artists Heath Hayner, Aram Nagle and Brian Piana met in a “Collaboration in the Arts” class at the University of Houston, where they came up with the idea for the installation, a modified map of Houston meant to show income disparities. Columns rise from the map to varying heights according to the per-capita income of each area, and each column emits a chime — the louder the chime, the needier the neighborhood. The chimes come on when visitors toss coins into the map; the loose change will ultimately be donated to a community development group. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
