HISD Superintendent Mike Miles went on HISD Now Sunday to announce that the district it is closing its campuses for Tuesday and Wednesday, January 21 and 22 due to the winter storm warning that predicts heavy snow and sleet possible for the Houston area.
In his recorded remarks, Miles thanked Houston Mayor John Whitmire for his collaboration in this decision.
Miles, known for his aversion to ever closing schools, wrote the following message sent out to HISD families this morning.
Dear Houston ISD Families,
The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. Based on the most up-to-date weather information available to the District at this time and to provide families with adequate time to plan ahead, all Houston ISD campuses will be closed on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 and Wednesday, January 22, 2025. No campus activities, including before or after school events and Athletics, will occur. Campus Principals and Assistant Principals will work from home to support campus needs.

Warming Centers: The City of Houston will operate 10 warming centers for families beginning Sunday, January 19th at 6pm. Locations for Warming Centers can be found here.The District will continue to monitor weather conditions in collaboration with local officials and will share an update to all Houston ISD families regarding District Operations for Thursday, January 23rd at 12pm on Wednesday, January 22nd.

Miles said there would be further communications from HISD about the weather’s effect on the campuses as the week progresses.
Most other area school districts have also announced they are closing on Tuesday and Wednesday. Among them: Fort Bend, Friendswood, Katy, Montgomery, Spring, Spring Branch and Tomball.
