It used to be that when your favorite NFL team drafted its next wave of rookies, for the most part, they were just a list of names on a piece of paper. Sure, you probably knew your team’s first round pick, and if a guy played for a good college team, you may have seen him play a handful of times, but for the most part, you wouldn’t know anything about them really until training camp.

Social media and the internet have changed all that, as they’ve changed pretty much everything. Now, with a little bit of detective work, you can find out in about five or ten minutes what all of your rookies are about. You can glean what their off field interest are, and just how highly they regard their own skills.

McKinney doesn’t do a lot of random musing. In fact, he doesn’t do a lot of tweeting at all. His account is mostly retweets. If Twitter accounts are an accurate reflection of the position a guy plays, McKinney’s account screams “no nonsense inside linebacker.”

Jaelen Strong’s Twitter account is one massive middle finger to anybody who never believed in him, not just during the 24 hours where he dropped from Day 1 to Day 2 of the draft, but for what appears to be pretty much his whole existence in social media. Hell, he’s wearing number 11 as a Texan to remind him that ten wide receivers were taken ahead of him. After the way that wide receiver position has performed (aside from Hopkins and Andre) the last four seasons, the room can use some red ass.

Like Strong, Mumphrey’s Twitter account is peppered with tweets about people disrespecting and not believing in him. Strong and Mumphrey in the same position group should get really interesting. They may either kill each other or become WWE tag team champions someday. If you find Alan Bonner or Keshawn Martin beat up behind NRG Stadium, we know where to turn first.

Covington’s Twitter account paints the picture of a God-fearing, hard working, cerebral grinder (which makes him interchangeable on Twitter with practically every Rice football player of the last decade). These are all good things. Lots of bible verses, lots of updates on the rehab of his knee, lots of proper spelling and grammar. Gary Kubiak would be calling him a “good kid” (although, to be fair to other draftees, Kubiak pretty much called everyone a “good kid”.)
