Two years ago, Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud was coming off a rookie season that some argued was the greatest rookie season in NFL history, certainly in RECENT NFL history, over the last couple decades. It seemed like a foregone conclusion that Stroud would be the next franchise quarterback to get a generational, market setting contract extension after his third season.
Then came 2025, and with it came another inconsistent overall season from Stroud, a second offensive coordinator in Stroud’s young career, a second concussion, and perhaps most impactful of all, four interceptions in the first half of a playoff loss to the New England Patriots. Now, Stroud and the Texans are both in “wait and see” mode on a contract extension for the former second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Despite the feeling that the Patriots game was a massive tipping point in this discussion, Stroud’s star falling into contractual purgatory has been a slow two year burn since his other worldly rookie season. Even without the four interceptions against the Patriots, short of a trip to the Super Bowl for the Texans last season, we are probably in this very spot with Stroud.
Stroud was asked last Thursday about how his contractual situation has affected his preparation for the season:
Now that we’ve got Stroud on the record saying SOMETHING about his contractual future, let’s dig in on some follow up thoughts:
Stroud’s answer to the question was perfect
I’ve been waiting for Stroud’s answer to “the contract question” since the Texans’ season ended that night in New England, and I thought Stroud did a masterful job of answering a question regarding what, I’m sure, is a frustrating situation for him. The answer was right out of a textbook — defer to your agent “handling things” for you, highlight your actual goal this offseason (improving every day), remind people that you’re holding up your end of that bargain, and then echo what upper management has been saying all season, which is that they are excited for Stroud to be their QB in 2026. The key with that last detail is that neither side is publicly looking beyond the upcoming season, which I think makes sense for both sides.
This story is not going away
My contention is that Stroud’s contractual limbo, along with, at the very least, his physique (slender C.J. has entered the chat) and looks (new haircut) transformation both make him the most intriguing player in the league heading into training camp. Of all the young players in the league in line for a second contract, Stroud is the one that generates the most debate, discussion, and disagreement. The local media got the current version of Stroud’s answer, but keep in mind that the national NFL folks will be descending on Texans training camp this summer, and they will all be picking at that contractual scab over and over again.
Adam Schefter of ESPN fanned the flames on Friday
Speaking of national folks, the day after Stroud downplayed the significance of the contract topic, Adam Schefter, ESPN’s lead news breaker, went on “The Pat McAfee Show” and predicted that Stroud actually WOULD get his deal done this summer, and not have to wait for 2027:
I am calling B.S. on this one, loud and from the rooftops! Here’s the “tell” that Schefter is purely, 100 percent guessing on this bit of “news” — he mentioned that Stroud “got his hair cut this week.” Stroud got his hair cut several months ago. Schefter has been paying zero attention to the Texans, if I had to guess. Thus, I am viewing this as Schefter just riffing on a topic where he is clueless. Unfortunately, his street cred as a news breaker turns anything he says into some sort of presumptive report of actual rumor or news.
