The first weekend of October is shaping up to be a wet one, but Space City Weather meteorologist Eric Berger says he doesnโ€™t anticipate severe weather.

Although it might prompt some to postpone family picture day at the pumpkin patch, the good news is that a rainy weekend could bring a welcome โ€œmodest cool frontโ€ early next week.

โ€œIt will be a soggy weekend, yes,โ€ Berger wrote on his Space City Weather blog. โ€œBut at the same time itโ€™s not going to rain everywhere, all the time. There will definitely be breaks in the showers, so if youโ€™re planning to attend a festival, or a college football game, or something else, do not abandon all hope.โ€

Texas is getting the remnants of Hurricane Polo, which brought heavy rains to the Hill Country and Dallas-Fort Worth areas this week, causing more than 150 flights to be canceled at DFW Airport on Thursday.

Houstonโ€™s best rain chances are Friday evening through Sunday morning, although scattered showers already hit the area earlier this week and more are anticipated Thursday night.

โ€œAll in all, through Sunday, most of the Houston region should pick up 1 to 4 inches of rain. We are not planning to issue a flood stage warning on our flood scale at this time, but we will continue to monitor things closely,โ€ Berger said, noting that the storm brings the regionโ€™s best rain chances in weeks.

โ€œWhat concerns me most is the potential for these showers, tropical in nature, to produce briefly heavy rainfall,โ€ he said. โ€œAside from possibly the immediate coast, we donโ€™t expect too much of that behavior over the Houston region. Temperatures will gradually push downward, with highs in the upper 80s on Friday dropping to the mid-80s on Sunday, and overnight lows going from the upper 70s to the lower 70s.โ€

As of Thursday morning, no Friday night high school football games were canceled due to weather, but the October 2 Bellaire vs. Lamar game was forfeited due to confirmed staph infection cases on the Bellaire team.
