Best Deep Dish Pizza: Star Pizza’s Starburst
The first century Roman foodie Marcus Apicius allegedly first uttered “you eat with your eyes.” It’s fun to imagine the ancient gourmand devouring Star Pizza’s Starburst deep dish. Before his taste buds ever were piqued by the pie’s many meats and veggies, he’d be sated from mere glimpses of the meal. He’d spot ground beef and Italian sausage with a healthy dose of pepperoni. Onions, mushrooms and green onions would be enticing. He’d be able to see the cheese and the rich tomato sauce that pulls the meal together.
Apicius would appreciate the Starburst far more than a traditional Chicago-style deep dish, one where all the good bits are smothered by sauce and invisible to the hungry eye. And, he’d thrill in the perfection of the pie’s crust, which is sturdy enough to support its many yummy toppings but also a delicate, crispy bite. Star Pizza isn’t trying to emulate something from someplace else. This pie isn’t from Chicago (or Rome). The Starburst is all Space City and it’s the kind of pizza that’ll make you gleefully wipe the sauce on your toga between slices.
