Best Comfort Food: Menudo, Rita’s Mexican Restaurant (Rosenberg) and Laredo Taqueria

Sure, Mom’s meatloaf is comfort food and so is your favorite aunt’s crispy fried chicken, but comfort food is also a big bowl of flavorful, protein-packed, steaming hot menudo. If you grew up around it, the unmistakable aroma of boiling tripe is nostalgic and can whisk one back to less complicated times in life when ‘buelita stirred cumin, oregano and hominy into a bubbling pot while your parents chopped cilantro and cebolla for the garnish as you watched cartoons and waited patiently for breakfast.

The very best bowls we’ve had in recent months have come from two longtime favorites. Rita’s Mexican Restaurant in Rosenberg serves the delicacy with pigs’ feet or, upon request, sin patas, for those who’d rather not, along with a few hefty, delicious corn tortillas. This is our go-to Houston-area bowl, but for  purists who insist upon selections within the city limits, we choose Laredo Taqueria’s menudo, specifically from its Heights area location. It’s top notch, with rich colors, deep flavors and moist but firm bites of tripe. Try a bowl from either restaurant some weekend morning. Menudo is a perfect hangover cure, true comfort food for those who’ve ventured out the night before to sample our many Best Of bar selections.
