It’s always interesting to see a nightclub on a busy night when the music is loud, the crowd is spirited and plastered, the mood is festive and the possibilities seem limitless, then to go back a few nights later (to look for your credit card, ID, car keys, car and/or top lateral incisor) when the music is mellow, the crowd is sparse and slightly detached and the only possibility is going home to examine your crow’s feet, then back to work the next day. So it was, last Monday night at the Continental Club (3700 Main, 713-529-9899). Squid, one of the bartenders, serves a shot called Squid Shit. The name could have described the way I felt after enjoying the four-day weekend to its fullest. It was Bingo Night, with the El Orbits supplying the musical entertainment. Maybe it was just me, but I’m not sure the band could’ve lifted the collective spirit of the post-holiday crowd with some Prozac and a hot-air balloon, much less a few bingo cards and some vintage swing tunes. They made a valiant effort and Squid did his best to help out, but it was all I could do to collect my belongings and call it a night.
1 1/2 ounces vodka
1/2 ounce Melon Pucker liqueur
Splash of sweet and sour mix
Lime wedge
Shake ingredients with ice. Strain into shot glass. Serve with leftovers.
