Shrimp tacos are my current obsession. Yes, they are obviously just a riff on the classic fish taco, but the combination of a tempura battered shrimp on a freshly made corn tortilla with red cabbage and cilantro is not to be missed. And since they're only $2 during Yelapa Playa Mexicana's (2303 Richmond) happy hour (and, even better, reverse happy hour), it's an obsession that I can indulge in freely.
Although happy hour tequila shots, margaritas, and micheladas are only $4 during happy hour, I was really in the mood for a nice, crisp white wine to complement my taco. I consulted the menu, as well as my proficient bartender, Nas, for a pairing recommendation. Without hesitation, he suggested the Casa Madero Chardonnay. This Mexican white claims to be from the oldest South American winery, and you can taste the winemaking experience in every sip.
Crisp, fruity, and refreshing, this Chardonnay toned down the peppery bites and accentuated the fresh seafood taste of the tacos. It was a delightful combination that I will be revisiting soon.
