5. Kings of Pastry. In chronicling the prestigious Un Des Meilleurs Ouvriers cooking competition, this film conclusively proves French people take food, particularly, dessert very very seriously .At various points, you may want to scream, "It's only CAKE goddamnmit!" at these incredibly fastidious pastry chefs as they battle to create the most perfect, exquisite confections, but ultimately you be rendered speechless by their impeccable craft.
4. Vegucated. Three committed New York carnivores agree to go vegan for three weeks and wackiness ensues! But seriously, all those who claim they could never give up meat (myself included) will benefit from watching Vegucated , which uses wit and humor to demonstrate that switching to a plant-based diet is challenging but can transform personal health and the planet at large.
3. Pressure Cooker. Top Chef Masters has nothing on this film. Watch as three high school students from inner-city Philadelphia struggle and ultimately succeed under the tutelage of their hard-tasking culinary arts teacher to compete for scholarships in a cooking competition.
2. Forks Over Knives. Yes, I realize this is the second movie on this list advocating a plant-based diet, but I promise I am not trying to turn y'all into vegetarians. Forks Over Knives may lack some of the comedic punch of Vegucated but makes up for it in compelling and articulate commentary by two of the nation's leading experts in nutrition science.
1. Jiro Dreams of Sushi. Do you think you work hard, pay close attention to detail, and have remarkable endurance for tedious tasks? Guess what, you don't. Unless you're master chef Jiro Ono, owner of Sukiyabashi Jiro, a three Michelin star sushi restaurant that is regularly booked solid three months in advance. To say that Jiro takes sushi-making to an art form is the understatement of the year. And his precise and sophisticated cooking is all the more endearing given his soft-spoken humility.
