Dreamfest

Saturday, April 24

This eight-hour, two-venue fest, which will benefit the Houston affiliate of the Susan G. Komen breast cancer charity, is aptly named. Not only is it fighting for the dream of a breast cancer-free earth, but it also features plenty of dream-pop and other reverie-inducing music from the likes of Deep Ella, Pale, Strangelight, 61 Cygni, Of Normandy, Alkari, Casino, the Magdalene and the Methods. There's also a definite British tinge to the music -- the bands on this bill represent the most limey-esque contingent of Houston's indie rock community. Evident in their music will be lots of close study of records by Spiritualized, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Jesus and Mary Chain, Radiohead and, in the case of Casino at least, Oasis -- before they commenced to sucking. (And in guitarist Rob Atherton, Deep Ella even has a real-live Brit in the band.) The bands Alan and the Chemistry Set, both from Dallas, will also play, while KPFT Sound Awake DJ Jeffrey Thames will spin between sets at Fat Cat's, with DJ Cub and HK and Nancy handling those same chores across the street at Walter's.

Dreamfest takes place Saturday, April 24, at Fat Cat's, 4215 Washington Avenue, 713-869-5263 and at Walter's on Washington, 4216 Washington Avenue, 713-864-2727.
