Baby Bash

Baby Bash has come a long way since stepping on the hip-hop scene in 1994 as part of Bay Area group Potna Deuce, which he followed by stints with N2Deep, Jay Tee and Latino Velvet. Bash finally struck gold in 2003 with his hits "Suga Suga" and "Shorty Doo Wop" from his solo debut, Tha Smokin' Nephew, and he is hoping to match that success with his new album, Super Saucy. This time out he stays with the formula that was successful last time by working mostly with his longtime producer Happy Perez; Fredwreck and R&B artist Akon offer the rare outsider productions.

The Suga Suga man is back, and Super Saucy this time around.

The formula clicks with a couple of potential hits -- "That's My Lady (Money)," which features Nate Dogg, and "Throwed Off," with Paul Wall and Natalie -- but falters once you get to the experimental rock sound of "Who Wit Me." Some of Bash's best work comes on the Akon collaborations -- such as the first single "Baby I'm Back" and "No Way José," which is probably the best track on the entire project.

Lyrically, Bash is neither groundbreaking nor impressive. Instead, he depends on catchy hooks, production and good looks to sell records. This poses a problem: On almost every song that has a guest vocalist, the guest steals the show. Mac Dre swipes the spotlight on "Hennessey," Suga Free is the star of "That's What Tha Pimpin's There For" and E-40 obliterates "Keep It 100." And in an effort to capitalize on his appearance on Frankie J's hit song "Obsession," Bash includes a second-rate version of the song with group 3rd Wish. While some of the songs on the album will get some decent radio play and keep Bash's name out there for a time, Super Saucy's spice fades quickly.
