Gouache on paper — that’s what little girls are made of in the latest works by Mindy Kober. Baby Police is a simple beige-and-maroon painting of two little ladies at play. One is dressed up in a police dress and directing another who’s pushing a baby carriage. In Destructive Tendencies, a little blond girl faces two trees — one black and scary, complete with owl, and another blossoming as if it’s spring. Other works feature men and women swimming; the drawings almost resemble clip art, with people in various diving or swim-stroke positions. Kober’s works have a hip, mid-century modern vibe with stark blank backgrounds that allow objects — in this case, little girls — to stand out with clean lines. In other words, it’s gouache that isn’t gauche. The show opens today with a reception from 7 to 10 p.m. Regular viewing hours are noon to 7 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Through February 7. ArtStorm, 4828 Caroline. For information, call 713-568-8174 or visit www.artstormhouston.com. Free.
Saturdays, Sundays. Starts: Jan. 10. Continues through Feb. 7, 2009
