The Seven Year Itch

Marilyn isn’t the only sexy blond that ever made a man want to scratch

The film version of The Seven Year Itch gave us Marilyn Monroe in a white dress standing over a New York City subway grate, its hot air blowing up her skirt while she writhed suggestively. That was as sexy as the 1950s ever got. Today Theatre Southwest’s production of The Seven Year Itch brings that smoldering sensuality to the stage with George Axelrod’s 1952 play, which spawned the movie. Itchis the story of Richard Sherman (Lloyd Clingman), a bland, middle-aged publishing company executive whose wife and child are away for the summer. When a hot young blond model (Kate Nelson) moves in upstairs, Richard’s real and fantasy lives collide amid the dueling manifestations of temptation and chastity. The play is based on the theory that after seven years of marriage, a husband’s mind starts to wander, but with such a beautiful blond upstairs, we’d understand if Richard got to scratching just seven weeks after saying his “I do’s.” 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; 3 p.m. Sunday, April 19.
