Las Ventanas

It was a sad day for Houston when Las Alamedas closed its doors in January 2009 because of a dispute with the landlord. George Sneider and his son Alex had developed one of the city's most beautiful restaurants, serving some of the city's most elegant Mexican cuisine in one of the city's most bucolic settings. Sad indeed. Little did we know that Alex would soon after start to work on his next restaurant, Las Ventanas (14555 Grisby Road, 281-752-6990), which recently made its debut.

"I called it Las Ventanas, which means 'windows,' because I really like how it sounds, and I was inspired by Las Ventanas del Paraiso in Cabo," says Alex. "The food is similar to the food that we served at Las Alamedas in that we're serving traditional Mexican cuisine mainly from Mexico City, where we still have a couple of restaurants, but also from some of the many regions of Mexico. You'll find ceviche and pescado Veracruz from the coast next to food from Mexico's interior," Alex says.

One of the main attractions of his new location is the massive outdoor patio and garden, which includes a play area for kids. "We built a children's playground, and we also have a kids' menu," says Alex. The interior is opulently and beautifully decorated and comes close to the feel of the old Las Alamedas, but without the dark woods and heavy atmosphere.

We ordered one of the house specialties, Parillada Las Ventanas for two. It came on a tableside warmer and consisted of four jumbo shrimp, a chicken breast, beef tenderloin, a Spanish chorizo and another sausage, guacamole, pico and some of the best charro beans ever.
