The pairing of skin art and the forbidden came together quite naturally for gallery owner Meg Poissant as she put together the exhibit “Tattoo/Taboo.” She tells us, “I think people make visual judgments all the time, either about tattoos or something else that signals a taboo. Both are forbidden.” Most people today might not think of tattoos as being forbidden, but that hasn’t always been the case. “Did you know it used to be illegal to get a tattoo in New York? You had to know a guy who knew a guy who knew a guy. Then you went down in a basement somewhere and he worked on you there.” The artwork Poissant has collected for “Tattoo/Taboo” ranges from literal interpretations (a photograph of a woman getting a tattoo) to the more esoteric explorations (Styrofoam hangings). Participating artists include Rev. Butter and Laine Whitcomb. 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays. Through August 14. Poissant Gallery, 5102 Center.
