Family drama is as bad as it gets in Giuseppe Verdi’s 1867 opera Don Carlos. The dark drama tells what happens in a royal household when a king marries the woman who was promised to his son. And it’s all for political gain — what an enormous bummer! According to Bill Haase, managing director of Opera in the Heights, the theater is a perfect fit with this wicked story. “Even though this tale is of epic proportions, it’s really a family story about love, revenge and remorse, and it’s best told in the intimate setting of Opera in the Heights. So you get to see…and feel these emotions up close.” This opera is a classic. “The music is great,” says Haase. “It contains one of the best known, most loved duets in opera, the Carlo/Rodrigo duet.” And then there’s lots of gore and guts. “The whole thing is set in 16th-century Spain, with a ruthless ruler. There’s even an off-stage burning of the heretics in the show.”
