“Tom Berg”

Where some people see a chair, Tom Berg sees art. Working in Wyoming during the late ‘70s, Berg was painting a lot of landscape pieces, but was forced to paint inside his studio during the winter. As he looked around, he found some old lawn chairs. After hanging them flat on the walls, he discovered that they weren’t just objects, they had life to them. “The chairs have a sort of presence and that’s what keeps me painting them,” says Berg, who now lives in Santa Fe. Those chair paintings were the first of a different kind of landscape, a theme Berg has continued for more than 30 years.

The exhibit “Tom Berg,” currently at Wade Wilson Art, features Berg’s paintings from the past two years, all of which focus on exposing subtle elements of everyday objects such as chairs, trailers and cattle, to name a few. In one painting, Backlit Pair, Berg depicts a set of pears side by side, carefully comparing the textures that make them unique. In Sling Chairs with Reflected Landscape, a metal trailer becomes a mirror to its surroundings. Opening reception with the artist, 6 p.m. February 18. Regular viewing hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Through March 19. 4411 Montrose. For information, call 713-521-2977 or visit www.wadewilsonart.com. Free.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: Feb. 18. Continues through March 19, 2011
