She Stoops to Comedy

Shakespeare writes, “All the world’s a stage.” In the comedy She Stoops to Comedy, David Greenspan writes, “The world’s a fuckin’ drag show.” Greenspan conjures up all those odd Elizabethan theatrical conventions in his wild show-within-a-show.

At the center of the story is Alexandra, a lesbian actress who wants to win back Alison, her lover, in a decidedly Shakespearean manner. Alexandra auditions for the role of Orlando in a production of As You Like Itin which Alison is playing Rosalind. Greenspan’s story puts Alexandra off stage, in the bathroom, for a good part of the play, because it’s there that she’s getting herself up in drag. The fact that the role of Alexandra is actually played by a man is, of course, a nod to the Elizabethan theater, in which all characters, including females, were played by men.

It all comes to life today in this show from Unhinged Productions, which plays with time and space while pushing gender-bending to an extreme. 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 7:30 p.m. April 24, April 25 and May 1.
