An empty-nest couple, settled in their ways, gets shaken up by the appearance of a new woman. It’s an old, too often true, story. But playwright A.R. Gurney has put a comedic twist on that plot in Sylvia, which opened off Broadway in 1995.

In this charming story about middle-aged New Yorkers Kate and Greg, Gurney recasts the other woman as a sweet, utterly adoring labradoodle named Sylvia. Greg brings the pooch home one day in a fit of middle-aged loneliness. Sylvia, who is played by a young woman, adores Greg, saying things like “I think you’re a God” to the man as she settles into apartment living on the Upper West Side. Greg is smitten from the start, but he senses his wife, who’s just gotten her career going and is handling the empty nest more easily than Greg, isn’t as happy with the new addition to the family.

The play follows the comedic tribulations of the couple as they adjust to the dog and to each other at a bumpy time of life. Vincent Canby of The New York Times called the New York production of Sylvia “delicious” and “critic proof.” We’d add “refreshing” and “clever.” 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays.
