At first glance, Deepwater Horizon 1 by Demiak seems to be an idyllic scene: a small cabin set over water. But look a little closer — that’s blood in the water. There’s a dinghy tied to a porch rail, but no people are to be seen. Instead of lush surroundings, the cabin sits amid dead trees, and just a few leaves of wilted green plants are seen in the water. One of the works seen in the exhibitDutch InvasiON at Box 13 ArtSpace and Williams Tower Gallery, Deepwater Horizon 1 is typical of Demiak’s work. He reconstructs natural disasters and catastrophes in small-scale models in hyperrealistic photographs of the models, but without regret or sympathy. Instead, it is a simple and straightforward indictment of society, as if to say, “See what we’ve done.”
