Ars Lyrica Houston joins forces with New York Baroque Dance Company to explore the fate of ungrateful women during the concert performance of Heaven and Hell. (Can you guess where the women end up?) The musicians share the stage with seven dancers and six vocalists for a fully staged program featuring two works by Claudio Monteverdi.
Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda is a dramatic cantata that chronicles the battle between Christian knight Tancredi and a Muslim challenger. After being mortally wounded, the challenger is revealed to be the maiden Clorinda, Tancredi’s lover. Il ballo delle ingrate (The Ballet of the Ungrateful Women) is set at the mouth of hell, where the king of the underworld calls for the proud females living above to be brought to him and shown what punishment awaits them for not returning the love of their suitors.
