Sculptor Louise Bourgeois, who was best known for the giant spider structures she created in the 1990s, was the first woman who ever earned a major retrospective at the New York Museum of Modern Art. The documentary Louise Bourgeois: The Spider, the Mistress and the Tangerine shows us why. Filmmakers Marion Cajori and Amei Wallach filmed the profile over 14 years and captured both the public and the private woman.

Todayย’s screening is part of the Artists on Film series, which continues next week with Painters Painting: New York Art Scene 1940-1970. 7 p.m. today and tomorrow. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 1001 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-639-7515 or visit www.mfah.org. $6 to $7.
