Hugely popular among black audiences, comedian Gary Owen is not black. In fact, he’s kind of pasty pale even for a white guy. Still, he won Funniest Black Comedian in San Diego (that’s an actual competition), and has worked onstage and in film with well-known African-American comics such as the Wayans Brothers, Mike Epps and Kevin Hart.
He was a regular on Tyler Perry’s House of Payne. “People stop me — usually black people — and ask me what Tyler Perry is really like,” Owen says in a clip on the Comedy Shaq Internet channel. “I said I don’t know, I’m not fucking up that check! If Tyler is hungry, I say, ‘I could eat, too.’ If Tyler says, ‘I’m cold,’ I say, ‘It is a bit chilly inside.’”
