After meeting at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s Glassell School, artists Jane Ewen and Kelyne Reis decided that showing in the same gallery might be a good idea, even though their styles weren’t exactly similar. That idea becomes reality with “Encounters: Similarities & Contrasts — Kelyne Reis and Jane Ewen.”
The similarities between the two artists are the use of color and sense of movement. The contrasts are in style; Reis is more concrete in her work, with solid lines and outlined shapes, while Ewen has a more fluid, abstract sensibility. Though the two now live in Houston, Reis is a native of Brazil while Ewen is from Canada.
There’s an opening reception 3 to 6 p.m. on November 5 featuring Ewen’s daughter Sandy (The Weird Weeds, various side projects) playing improvised guitar. She’ll be joined by no-joke, big-time experimentalist Damon Smith on stand-up bass. Regular viewing hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Through November 30.
